You ever see someone doing something great and admire him or her for it, but don’t see yourself doing the same thing? Could be somebody who is doing extremely well financially in a job they love, or took a chance to pursue something they’re passionate about and now it’s flourishing. It’s not that you don’t want to do what they’re doing, it’s that you just can’t fully imagine yourself doing it.
Thoughts may pass through your mind like…
“I would love to do that, but they are different than me. They are just one of those people who things work out for, or who like to take risks. And me… well I’m just not the kind of person that takes those kinds of risks because I have responsibilities to take care of. Or I’m just not outgoing enough to connect with people.”
Over the years as I’ve talked to people doing amazing things and asked how they did it, I’ve noticed two common things about their responses. The first is that they all say they had an idea or an urge to do something. And the second is when I ask if starting with a master plan is what made them successful, their response is, “No, it was that I just started doing it.”
I believe we all have a tremendous amount of untapped potential in us. We falsely believe that the people who do incredible things are somehow different than us.
This simply is not true.
We all have unique strengths and abilities. And we all also have the common ability to step out of our comfort zone and leverage those strengths to live the life of our dreams.
If you have made it to this point in the article, I would offer that you have already taken the first step. Could the idea that’s been bouncing around in your head for the past few days/weeks/months/years be turned into your new reality?
The act of doing it starts with taking the next step towards whatever that idea. It could be writing it down, it could be reaching out to someone you trust to talk about it, or it could simply be allowing your imagination to take over and thinking about what your future life will be like. Whatever it is, do it RIGHT now.
